Yeah, so I am off work again. Guess that means I'll be back on line more, though I'm trying to get a lot done at home right now so I won't pretend to make any promises. I'm currently killing half of my lawn on purpose, creating a "outdoor living space" in my back yard, rearranging my landscaping, painting the house, preparing to hire someone to re roof the house and preparing to repaint the shed. And that's just the stuff on the outside. The inside is pure chaos. We've all been working so much outside that we've severely neglected inside. The laundry is finally almost caught up after 5 days of washing and the kitchen has been found though there is still at least two more loads of dishes to do. Its all a bit overwhelming and highly intimidating. It didn't help that I lost my "gung ho" motivation. I didn't realize I was doing so much to leave an impression on my inlaws. Last weekend, I discovered that I was though. I had a bit of a break down from the stress of all I'm trying to get down for my inlaws in redmond and dissapointment because the inlaws in Olympia didn't make it up to see the transformation of the house. I realize now that I got a bit crazed in the first 3 weeks of unemployment. As a result I've been sick the last few days but I'm getting back on my feet and I'll be damned if the house won't be fully painted by the end of the weekend. But naturally, as a result of illness and pity, I've run to the computer for distraction. I stumbled onto an amazing piece of fanfic for Greys Anatomy (which is something I don't usually read) and now I'm using each chapter to motivate me to further my painting endevours. As soon as I finish this chapter that I'm currently reading, I get to go outside and paint the front porch. YAY! But hey, when that's done, I get to read the next chapter and I'll admit, after two weeks of painting preparation and application, reading is FAR FAR Mmore exciting. Thank You Burning Eden for helping me get my ass in gear and giving me some form of reward system. I owe you one.

Speech: (on his website with Spanish translation) http://www.barackobama.com/2008/05/01/obama_statement_on_the_may_1_i.php

Two years ago, I came home to Chicago to witness the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of citizens and immigrants united in an effort to fix our immigration system. I spoke to the marchers that day, and Senator Kennedy spoke to those marching in Washington. They said to us, "today we march and tomorrow we vote." Two years later, our immigration problems remain unresolved, and those who want change will have to vote for change in November. So today, I encourage the thousands of people who are marching and calling for change to work hard registering voters in the months to come. Your vote is your voice.
Four-hundred thousand marchers were in Chicago that day and hundreds of thousands of others came out and stood up around the country. They were marching to put a human face on the idea of America as a country of immigrants: the notion that people can come here and pursue a better life for themselves and, most importantly, for their children, if they work hard and apply themselves.

Two years later, politicians remain polarized and the challenge is unresolved. On the anniversary of those marches, I again express my commitment to comprehensive immigration reform and will do everything I can to bring order and compassion to a system that is broken today. It is in our interest and true to our tradition to come together and solve this problem. And as President, I intend to lead us in that effort.
The Plan: (on his website)
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/immigration/
(I encourage you to read his two page document and not just the summary)

Create Secure Borders

Obama wants to preserve the integrity of our borders. He supports additional personnel, infrastructure and technology on the border and at our ports of entry.

Improve Our Immigration System

Obama believes we must fix the dysfunctional immigration bureaucracy and increase the number of legal immigrants to keep families together and meet the demand for jobs that employers cannot fill.

Remove Incentives to Enter Illegally

Obama will remove incentives to enter the country illegally by cracking down on employers who hire undocumented immigrants.

Bring People Out of the Shadows

Obama supports a system that allows undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine, learn English, and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens.

Work with Mexico

Obama believes we need to do more to promote economic development in Mexico to decrease illegal immigration.

Barack Obama's Record

Crack Down on Employers: Obama championed a proposal to create a system so employers can verify that their employees are legally eligible to work in the U.S.

Fix the Bureaucracy: Obama joined Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) to introduce the Citizenship Promotion Act to ensure that immigration application fees are both reasonable and fair. Obama also introduced legislation that passed the Senate to improve the speed and accuracy of FBI background checks.

Respect Families: Obama introduced amendments to put greater emphasis on keeping immigrant families together.

http://obama.senate.gov/podcast/060405-immigration_ref/

Speech: (on her website)

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=7423

"I salute the many Americans who have worked so hard in support of a comprehensive immigration reform that honors our history as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. As President, I am committed to working with Congress to introduce a comprehensive immigration reform bill within my first 100 days in office. I am also committed to continue working to end the demagoguery and divisiveness that has too often marked the immigration debate so that we can bring the American people together to achieve the reform we so badly need.

"I am proud to have been one of only two co-sponsors of Senator Kennedy's original comprehensive reform legislation back in 2004. I believe that reform must include -- as essential ingredients-- a strengthening of our border security, greater cross-cooperation with our neighbors, strict but fair enforcement of our laws, federal assistance to our state and local governments, strict penalties for those who exploit undocumented workers, and a path to earned legal status for those who are here, working hard, paying taxes, respecting the law, and willing to meet a high bar.

"Along with these changes, I believe we must repair those broken portions of our immigration system that irrevocably damage families and force citizens and lawful immigrants to live apart from their spouses and children overseas.

"Today’s marches add to the urgency of passing comprehensive immigration reform that finally solves the problems of our broken system."

The plan: (on her website)

Our immigration system is in crisis. The laws we currently have on the books are inadequate and no longer serve our best interests. As a nation, we place a premium on compassion, respect, and policies that help families, but our immigration laws don't reflect that.

Hillary has consistently called for comprehensive immigration reform that respects our immigrant heritage and honors the rule of law. She believes comprehensive reform must have as essential ingredients a strengthening of our borders, greater cross-cooperation with our neighbors, strict but fair enforcement of our laws, federal assistance to our state and local governments, strict penalties for those who exploit undocumented workers, and a path to earned legal status for those who are here, working hard, paying taxes, respecting the law, and willing to meet a high bar.

Hillary strongly believes we need to do more to know who is in our country by securing our borders and ensuring that employers comply with the law against hiring and exploiting undocumented workers. She supports deploying new technology that can help stop the flow of undocumented immigrants into the country and an employer verification system that is universal, accurate, timely, and does not lead to discrimination and abuse by employers.

Along with these changes, Hillary believes we need to repair those broken portions of our immigration system that irrevocably damage families and force citizens and lawful immigrants to choose between their newly adopted country and living with their spouse or children. We have a national interest in fostering strong families. This is why she introduced an amendment during consideration of the immigration reform bill that would have taken steps to protect the sanctity of families. Our American values demand no less.

And Hillary understands that our immigration policies have a direct impact on American workers. She opposes a guest worker program that exploits workers and creates a supply of cheap labor that undermines the wages of U.S. workers. Hillary believes all workers deserve safe conditions and decent wages. She supports an Ag Jobs program, which will keep our agricultural industry vibrant while enabling agricultural workers to receive the fair wages and labor protections they ought to receive.

When Hillary is president, comprehensive immigration reform will be a top priority.

Hillary has advocated for policies to help smooth the transition of legal immigrants once they arrive in the U.S. so that they can add to our economy and culture.

She championed the Legal Immigrant Children's Health Improvement Act, which would give states the option to provide federally funded Medicaid and SCHIP benefits to low-income legal immigrant children and pregnant women.

She wrote the Access to Employment and English Acquisition Act to meet the growing demand for English language courses and other job skills.

She strongly supports the DREAM Act, which provides a path to citizenship through military service or higher education for children who were brought to the U.S. by their parents.

She offered an amendment to make family reunification the guiding principle of our immigration system.

Also encourage others to read:
http://clinton.senate.gov/issues/immigration/

Today is an important day for me and one that should be remembered long after my generation fades into the night.

I decided to see what the democratic presidential candidates had to say on this day (I couldn't find anything from McCain) - I'm not sure why exactly, but I did and as a result I read a speech that was very moving... so I'm sharing.

Can you guess which candidate gave which speech?

SPEECH A
Today, we remember the light that was brought into the world by each of the six million Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust, as well as the terrible darkness of the Nazi genocide. We also renew our commitment to combat the scourge of anti-Semitism everywhere, and to stand up against extremism and prejudice of any form.
Let us resolve to confront genocide and work to prevent mass atrocities, beginning with greater action to stop the killing in Darfur. And let us stand with the Jewish State of Israel, a strong and resilient democracy that emerged out of the shadow of the Holocaust, but which still has enemies that threaten its destruction.

The years may pass, but our memory of the Holocaust will never fade. Instead, it guides our commitment to honor those who were lost, recall the crimes that were committed, and work for a more just, peaceful, and hopeful future for all people.

SPEECH B
"This week, we remember the millions of men, women, and children who perished during the Holocaust; and as we do, we ask, 'What must we do to ensure that this kind of destruction will never happen again?'
"We reflect on the lives that were lost, the courage of those who stood up to the Nazis, like the heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising; and those of all faiths who risked everything to save lives. On this somber day, I am also reminded of the Holocaust survivors that came to this country, and who have greatly enriched our nation with their talent, energy, and dreams. Their stories and their willingness to share them will guarantee that future generations will never forget.

"The lessons of the Holocaust call us to act. As my friend, ________, said, '...to remain silent and indifferent is the greatest sin of all...' Let us today renew our pledge that we will not be indifferent to moral injustice in the world; that we will not remain silent; and that we will speak out against crimes against humanity, threats of extermination, and genocide, such as that now being perpetuated in Darfur. We must act so that we may truly say to the world, 'Never again.'"

(I had to blank out the quoted friend because it apparently gives away the answer...)

SPEECH A: OBAMA http://www.barackobama.com/2008/05/02/statement_of_barack_obama_on_h.php
SPEECH B: CLINTON http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=7473

I've read a lot about H. Clinton and B. Obama about their support of the LGBT community. I have spoken with many members of the community locally that support Clinton. When I've asked them why, they tell me about how she's always fought the good fight and how much they admire her. Most of these people have been gay men. On line however I've found exactly the opposite...most of the members of the LGBT community I've encountered are firm and die hard supporters of Obama. They believe Bill Clinton threw the community "under the bus" and as such, Hillary Clinton should pay.

Now, as a Clinton supporter, and a member of the LGBT community, I would like to share my 2 cents.

TRANSGENDER:
Obama is not openly accepting of transgender people. He speaks to them in his speeches but he openly admits that he does not believe a bill that protects them from hate crimes and discrimination can pass at this time so he would leave them off in order to pass something that protects the rest of the community.

Clinton does and has always included the transgender community in all hate and discrimination bills she's proposed and supported. She has also given speeches expressing the importance of protecting ALL people. She is very good at including the community in her anti-discrimination, anti-hate crimes, and equal health care bills.

EDNA:
Obama and Clinton are almost equal on this topic, again, Clinton is very assertive when it comes to including the transgender community and including terminology such as 'gender identity' as something that can not be discriminated against.

HATE CRIMES:
Obama and Clinton are both 'riders' on the Matthew Shephard Act. Clinton has a strong history of supporting the community. In 2005 there was an attempt to pass an Anti-hate crime bill similar to the Matthew Shephard Act. Clinton was a co-sponsor of that bill. Obama was not. It is only in recent history that Obama has become involved.

AIDS:
Both candidates support funding and further research. Obama talks about the importance of prevention yet consistently has voted against all inclusive sex education acts that would make condoms more readily available to our youth. He believes in the term "age appropriate" and frequently dodges any questions that ask him to identify what that age is. Clinton has supported multiple attempts of all inclusive sex education acts and having federal programs that provide access to contraceptives. She believes when the school system starts sex ed, that is when they should start providing methods of disease prevention and birth control. She has not said if the federal government should be responsible for identifying how soon a school should start teaching sex ed.

DOMA:
Obama will repeal the entire thing however, Obama also feels it should be left up to the states and has implied he would put forth and pass something that says as much.
Clinton will repeal ALL of it EXCEPT the ability to leave it up to the states to decide. On this topic the two are the same.

They are separate when it comes to their discussions about "gay marriage." Both believe that gays should have the same legal rights as straight married couples. Both have indicated that should be addressed at the federal level. Obama has said he personally doesn't believe in allowing gays to marry HOWEVER he sees nothing wrong with Civil Unions. Clinton has expressed that she believes the church should decide about 'marriage' and that her faith doesn't have a strong view about it. Clinton dodges the topic of "marriage" vs "civil unions." Obama has said in a speech once that he believes all federal marriages should be called "civil unions" and therefore apply the same legal rights to all unions regardless of sex. I have not found anything where Clinton addresses this notion. Obama also says, in reference to the current idea of Civil Unions (not in reference to what he believes civil unions should be) ... Obama believes the current civil unions are NOT an example of 'separate but equal.' (which is a pile of bull in my mind) Clinton was not asked that question directly but she has indicated that she believes by making a separate definition it does segregate and isolate which is not a good idea.

DON'T ASK DON'T TELL
Obama and Clinton are against keeping these rules. They both see that DADT is no longer a useful or helpful rule. Clinton has explained how it was an important step when Bill Clinton passed it. Clinton also has said how it is time to take the next step. This is a very important issue to her. Obama has said he will not require that his chief advisers agree with the removal of don't ask don't tell. Which can indicate how strongly he feels about it. Clinton again, has not been asked that direct question. Many people hold DADT against Hillary Clinton. To that I say 1) brush up on your history, the idea of DADT was a good thing and it did make a difference... one that has now gone the wrong direction and needs to be modified. 2) Bill Clinton was a pushover. He had the power to pass the law the way he intended which would have allowed gays in the military and protected them... however he was afraid of turning his congress against him so instead he listened to his adviser (Colin Powell) and made compromises that were not necessary which created the DADT mind-set.

IF DADT is important to you, make sure you are nominating and electing a president that isn't afraid to stand up on their own two feet and make aggressive changes.

SUMMARY:
My opinion on Hillary Clinton is that she will compromise when she has to in order to achieve her goal. She will NOT compromise her principles in the process. If she can't get everything she wants, she'll pass what she can get and will continue fighting for what she didn't... or she'll throw in a bonus for the republicans in order to pass the things that are important to her. From what I've seen of her "republican bonuses" I personally am comfortable with her compromises and I support her.

My opinion on Barack Obama is that he will listen to his mentors and advisers. He was hand picked to be a senator and was given very important and influential pieces of legislation to put his name on right before they were passed. He has done almost everything Kennedy and Kerry have said he should do. I have not found a thought or bill that he presented in the Senate that wasn't presented prior to him. He has a charisma that gets things passed and agreed to, but it does not appear that he has any personal convictions about anything other than going to war was a bad idea. He also doesn't have a record of backing up his convictions (he's voted against a deadline to withdraw). He is willing to make compromises which is a great trait and is important... however I do not agree with him on the topic of transgenders. He hasn't even TRIED to pass anything to protect them, he simply says it won't and therefore excludes them. That is NOT the role of a leader.

I agree, both candidates are weaker than I'd like on the LGBTIQ front... however, I firmly feel that Clinton does have the upper hand on this topic AND I will support and help her in any way I can.

On Larry King last night - Snow (former White House press secretary under President Bush) said

SNOW: I think [Sen. John] McCain's going to win, actually, because I think security and the economy both break his way.

But on the Democratic side ... you have got this charisma and emotion on the part of Obama. Can people stay in love with him from now until November? If so, it makes him a stronger candidate. If, on the other hand, the more you learn about him, the more you fall out of love, that's a campaign that could collapse.

Meanwhile, with Hillary Clinton, you have somebody who is battle tested. You have a political machine. You have a lot of experience. And you're going to have the ability to do whatever it takes to try to pull the party together. If you need that kind of machine operation, I think she does better.

------------
I wonder which candidate is going to get more votes as a result of these comments...

So Obama has stated he won't win Pennsylvania. As a result, the winds have changed. What happened to the man that ended the debate this last week saying that focusing on the negative mud-slinging is a bad idea and only serves as a distraction? What happened to the guy who said he is a new type of politics. Where'd the respectful smiling man go who was focusing his leadership qualities on focusing on the positive and our future?

Maybe it all started when he slipped and said 'bitter' - poor guy. In the sentiment I actually agree with him. But whatever happened, there has definitely been a change in the direction of the wind.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24232691/

So now, Obama focuses his stump speeches on Clinton ... while Clinton doesn't talk about him at all, instead she talks about policies and platforms and what this country needs.

Very interesting.

I vote for Hillary because she's consistent, she's effective, she's dedicated, and she isn't running for the presidency to prove she can. I vote for Clinton because she's kept her mouth shut and not attacked Obama on many things that I would have mentioned months ago, yet somehow her campaign decided it was poor and dirty politics so they left it alone. I vote for Clinton because she didn't start the character assasination wars and she let months of attacks wash off her back. I vote for Clinton because she doesn't whine in the middle of debates. I vote for Clinton because she embellishes statements about sniper fire when she is in a heated discussion but when she is talking about policies and the American People - UNSCRIPTED - she doesn't 'accidentally' sound like an elitist. I vote for Clinton because she's stood on her own two feet her entire political career and hasn't ridden the shirt tails of anyone (ie. Obama and J. Emil). I vote for Clinton because she has integrity and loyalty and devotion.

I'll vote for Obama vs McCain... IF... Washington State looks like it won't vote democrat in the General Election.

I won't vote for Obama because I don't trust him. His words don't match what he has done in the past. His speeches don't match what he says when he isn't scripted. His religious convictions (see keynote address 2006) have the right attitude and thought but his underlying priorities appear too risky for me.

I won't vote for Obama because I don't know who he really is. I know McCain better than Obama. And really, I probably trust McCain more than Obama, but I don't agree with McCain or the Republican platform so if I have to, I'll vote for Obama. But until then. Clinton. Hillary Clinton.

She isn't going to put a band-aid on our problems.

She isn't going to sit back and say "I told you as president I would allow you - the American people - to stand up for yourselves and make things happen. It isn't my fault you aren't doing anything so therefore all I have to do is sit here and smile."

I can't believe how long it's been since I've had computer time! Ugh. I'm so behind.

Very quick recap. Friday the 11th I got a call from the union telling me I had a job. YAY! I was so excited and happy. I was revived. My energy really needed that boost. I showered, I shaved, I did laundry, I worked in the yard. It was great.

Saturday the 12th Rae and I worked out side. I cut the underside of the shrubs/trees in the southeast corner of the lot. I'm trying to clear it out under there so I can keep the kayaks there and keep the firewood there. Rae worked on morning glories and weeds in the bed along the south side of the house. Meanwhile L's worked on cleaning the kitchen and the dining area. I also cleaned the living room table so we could work on taxes. Saturday night the three of us went to L's work party. It was an interesting evening. The house had three fish tanks, one with a very interactive water turtle about the size of my head.

Sunday we started working on taxes around 10am. We finally gave up around 10pm. We got close to having them all figured out but ran out of steam before filing.

Monday I started class in Mt Vernon. Monday and half of Tuesday I made a step stool, the rest of Tuesday I watched videos on joinery. Wed and Thurs I made a three shelf cubby. I made my own custom trim on it so as to get more comfortable with the router and biscuit joiner. Friday morn I made a 12 x 10 inch box. Not bad for a week of class. I brought all the projects home and hope to use them in the shed. Next week I'm going back to class and I intend to work on laminates - ie. counter top covering.

Monday I also tried calling the union back for details about job orientation on the 17th. I left 3 messages.

Tuesday I tried the union again, finally got through on the third call. I was told that the job can't use 1st level apprentices - sorry. So no damn job. Oh man was I kicked in the teeth. Needless to say when I got home from class we went out to Applebees for dinner so I could have a long island iced tea.

Wednesday night we had dinner with M&B for B's birthday (it was April 14th). We went to $1 sushi night at Little Toyko. It isn't really a buck, but still... it was a good dinner and it was really great to see M&B again. It seems like it's been forever since I've seen them.

Thursday night I think we ate leftovers and watched the new criminal minds episode.

Friday night Rae and I went out for beer with her co-worker and had mexican food. That was a great conversation. Talked about the differences of how women process their work days vs men. Talked about the need to vent and just vent, not get a solution. Discussed some of the things I've seen on the jobsite vs in the office. Also heard a joke about a Washingtonian, Californian, and Texan. All in all, it was a good evening. L and Rae went out for groceries afterwards.

Saturday got up early to get ready to go to Rae's mom's for passover. L got us Baglery for breakfast. We packed up the car and headed down south about 10:30. Had a nice passover day with the family. L made Matso ball soup. Left there and got home 11:30 last night. I was exhausted and the ladies pretty much poured me into bed.

Up early this morning though. About 6:45. Now I'm trying to catch up on lj. I'm still not happy about the job but I'm trying to get over it.

It snowed yesterday and there's some left on the ground here at home. I guess I won't be working outside today. Maybe we'll finishing putting away all our tax stuff and the laundry instead. Hopefully I can get more tv watched out of the DVR queue. (need to get it cleaned out so I can replace the box).
